California Youth Empowerment Commission to Hold Second Meeting in San Diego
November 22, 2024
SAN DIEGO — The California Youth Empowerment Commission (YEC) will hold its second meeting Saturday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City Heights Center, at 4305 University Avenue in San Diego.
The meeting will focus on “visioning” to establish YEC’s strategic direction and priorities, along with the launch of a policy training series, and discussion on housing justice. YEC aims to provide recommendations for innovative solutions that reflect the real-world experiences of youth and to champion policies that promote the well-being of all young people, especially those in disadvantaged communities.
“San Diego County has the second largest population in California with data showing youth make up about 20% of the county’s unsheltered homeless population. Bringing YEC to San Diego to learn from community members and stakeholders about best practices in response to these challenges and to co-create solutions is what the Commission is all about.”
Saturday’s meeting will include a panel discussion on housing justice, featuring Commissioner Aidan Lin-Tostado; Nicole Lillie, Executive Director of (Youth) at Our Time To Act; David Baker, Youth Systems Director at YMCA of San Diego County; and Zee King, a youth community leader. The panelists will address housing challenges impacting young people and propose actionable solutions.
The UC Berkeley Possibility Lab will also launch its policy training series, which will engage commissioners in discussions about their aspirations and goals for the program. Joyce Chiao, CEO and founder of Abundance, will also lead a brainstorming session titled “Commission Visioning: Shaping the California Youth Empowerment Commission’s Strategic Direction.”
The California Youth Empowerment Commission was established to empower young leaders across California, providing a platform for them to influence policy decisions and address critical issues affecting their peers.
